A certificate of deposit, or CD, pays you a fixed interest rate in exchange for leaving your money untouched until a set maturity date. The problem with a single CD is timing: put everything into a five-year CD and your cash is locked away, but keep everything in a short CD and you earn a lower rate. A CD ladder solves this by splitting your money across several CDs that mature at staggered intervals, so some cash frees up regularly while the rest keeps earning.

Building a simple ladder is straightforward. Suppose you have money you will not need for everyday spending. Divide it into five equal parts and buy CDs maturing in one, two, three, four, and five years. After one year, the first CD matures. You can spend that money if you need it, or roll it into a new five-year CD. Repeat each year, and soon you hold five CDs maturing one year apart, with the longest ones earning the highest rates.

The main advantage is flexibility with discipline. Unlike a savings account, where money is tempting to withdraw, a CD creates a small barrier that protects your plan, while the ladder means you never wait more than a year for access to a portion of your funds. This makes ladders popular for emergency-adjacent savings, money set aside for a future expense, or retirees who want predictable income without stock market swings.

There are trade-offs to understand. CD rates often lag behind inflation, so money in a ladder may lose purchasing power over time even as the balance grows. Early withdrawal penalties can also eat into interest if you break a CD before maturity, which is exactly why the ladder structure matters: it reduces the odds you will ever need to break one. Compare rates across banks and credit unions, since the same term can pay noticeably different rates at different institutions.

Start small and keep it simple. You do not need a large sum to build a ladder, and many banks allow modest minimum deposits. Keep your true emergency fund in an instantly accessible account, and use the ladder only for money you can afford to leave alone until each rung matures. Review your ladder once a year, roll maturing CDs deliberately, and let the structure do the quiet work.

Most savers buy CDs directly from a bank or credit union, but brokered CDs sold through a brokerage account are worth knowing about. Brokered CDs can offer competitive rates and let you hold CDs from several banks in one account, but they work differently: if you need your money early, you must sell the CD on a secondary market, where the price can fall below what you paid. Bank CDs, by contrast, allow early withdrawal for a defined penalty. For a first ladder, bank CDs are simpler and more predictable, while brokered CDs suit savers who are certain they can hold to maturity.

CD interest is taxed as ordinary income in the year it is earned, even if you leave it in the account, which surprises some first-time savers. If you hold CDs in a taxable account, set aside a portion of the interest for tax time or adjust your withholding, so the tax bill does not eat into the ladder's purpose. Holding CDs inside a tax-advantaged retirement account avoids the annual tax drag, but then the money is subject to retirement account rules. Either way, factor taxes into your expected return rather than treating the advertised rate as the full story.

A CD ladder is a poor fit for money you might need suddenly, since early withdrawal penalties can erase months of interest, and it is a poor fit for long-term wealth building, since returns rarely beat inflation over decades. It shines for specific jobs: holding a house deposit for two years, parking money between a sale and a purchase, or generating predictable income in retirement alongside other investments. Be honest about which job your money is doing, and if the answer is long-term growth, a diversified investment portfolio, not a ladder, is the right tool. The best financial structures are chosen for the job at hand, not because they sound safe in general.
